Franciscus Bultinck was born in Oostwinkel, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 7 September 1729[1] and died in Lembeke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 6 Apr 1788[2]. He was the son of Joannes and Anna Marie (Van Hecke) Bultinck. He married on 1 October 1768 in Lembeke[3] Caroline Theresia Van Waes born 2 September 1739[4] in Lembeke and died there on 15 February 1782[5]. Caroline was the daughter of Petrus and Maria Cornelia (Lievens) Van Waes.

            Franciscus was baptized Joanne Franciscus but apparently never used the name Joannes. In all records he is identified as Franciscus. His oldest child was born on 3 October 1768, just 2 days after his marriage to Caroline. Normally, I would have to conclude that Francis and Caroline were waiting to the last minute for this wedding. But Maria Petronella’s baptismal record states that she was baptized by the midwife. This was done when the baby was sickly and there was a chance she would not survive long enough to make a trip to the church. I wonder if she was born early and was small prompting the midwife to baptize her.

            Both Caroline and her son Judocus died on 15 February 1782. It is likely that there was an epidemic in the community, influenza or typhoid fever or dysentery perhaps. The church burial register for this period lists many deaths in Lembeke. Additionally, son Petrus died on 17 May 1782, making 3 deaths the family had to contend with in a short period of time.

Judocus Van De Veire was born in Sleidinge, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 7 February 1737[i] and died in Oosteeklo, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 12 March 1796[ii]. He was the son of Joannes and Joanna (Hofferis) Van De Veire. He married Livinia Pyckevet on 29 Apr 1760 in Oosteeklo[iii]. She was the daughter of Judocus and Marie (Dieriux) Pyckevet and was born 11 September 1736[iv] in Oosteeklo and died there on 25 October 1810.[v]

            Judocus and his brother Joannes married sisters. Joannes married Joanna Pyckevet and Judocus married her sister Livinia. Judocus lived and died in the era before public records were kept so the only records widely available are church records. Judocus could sign his name. His signature appears more than once in the parish register.

Margaret Cook (Kock, Koch) (1783-Aft 1871)

Margaret Cook was born in New York about 1783 and died in Williamsburg, Dundas, Ontario after 1871. Her parentage is unknown. She married Mathias Barkley on 7 January 1804 in Albany County, New York. He was born about 1783 in Albany County, New York and died on 12 May 1848 in Matilda, Dundas, Ontario.

            Not much is known about Margaret but there is a lot of speculation evident on the Internet. Birth dates for Margaret range from 1772 to 1782 and death dates from 1851 to 1876. Here is the information I have been able to collect for her.

            Margaret was living with her daughter Amy and her husband Isaac Mill when the 1851 census[1] was taken as of 12 January 1852. She is enumerated as Margaret Barkley, born in the US, Presbyterian, widowed, age 69. I am unable to locate her in the 1861 census, but she is no longer living with Amy and Isaac. In 1871, Margaret Barkley is enumerated with her daughter Eliza and her husband John Beckstead[2] in Williamsburg. She is listed as Margaret Barkley, age 88, born in the US, Methodist, widowed.  She may have been living with Eliza’s family in 1861 also but I have not been able to find the John Beckstead family in the 1861 census. Because she was alive in 1871, we can eliminate any death date before this date. Therefore, the Find a Grave Memorial[3] for her is incorrect. This has an 1851 death date.

            I have chosen a 1783 birth year for Margaret. In 1852 it is stated that she is 69 which equates to a 1783 birth year and in 1871 it is stated that she is 88 which also equates to a 1783 birth year. This also equates well with the birth years of her children. Her first child was born in 1804 and the youngest in 1828. If she was born in 1783, she would have had her youngest at 21 and her oldest at 45. If we consider the 1772 birth year which is found on several trees, she would have been 32 when her first child was born and 56 when the youngest was born. Fifty-six is a possible but unlikely age to have children. A birth year of 1778 falls in the middle and is more likely giving her a reproductive span of 26 to 50. But since her age is consistent for both census returns, I have chosen 1783.

            Margaret’s parents are unknown. Several Internet trees claim she is the daughter of Johann Koch, born in Palatine, Montgomery, New York in 1740 and died in 1804 in Mohawk, Herkimer, New York and Elizabeth Delaney. There is a German Koch family who baptized children in the Stone Arabia Reformed Church from 1752 to 1772. One of them is named John, born 2 November 1740 but he is married to Helena or Lena but not Elizabeth. He was born in 2 Nov 1740 and died 23 March 1804. He is the son of Caspar and Verena (Muller) Koch and the husband of Magdalena Dillenback. There is no evidence that he had a daughter named Margaret. I do not think this John Koch is the father of Margaret Cook.

            I searched the 1790 US Census for Cook or Koch families living in Montgomery County. In 1790 Montgomery County was very large and the area would be broken into several daughter counties starting in 1791. I found 2 Cook or Koch families living in the area. One was Joseph Koch living in Herkimer and the second is John Cook living in Otsego. I should look also at candidates in the Albany or Schoharie areas since that is where husband Nicholas’ family was living.

Mathias Barkley (1783-1848)

Mathias Barkley was born in Albany County, New York about 1783 and died in Matilda, Dundas, Ontario on 12 May 1848. He is the son of Henry Adam and Hannah Catherine (Cooglar) Barkley. He married Margaret Koch (Kock, Cook) on 7 January 1804 in Albany County, New York. She was born about 1783 in New York and died after 1871 in Dundas County, Ontario.

The Barkleys are a German Palatine family. Eberhard Buercklin and his family came to North America from Baden-Wuerttemberg to farm on Rensselaer’s estate in Albany County. As the English-speaking officials began adding this family to historical records, the name became Barkley, Berkley, Barclay and even Perkly. Perkly is the only one not found in Eberhard’s descendants.

Mathias and Margaret lived in New York until about 1810. They had 13 known children. The first 3 were born in New York and the remainder in Ontario. Why did Mathias and Margaret move to Dundas County? He had 4 uncles and their families living there. The Barkley family supported King George in the Revolution and fought with the New York Loyal Rangers. Six of Eberhard’s sons were Loyalists. Son Henry Adam, Mathias’ father, did not join a military unit and son Michael served in the New York Militia and qualified for a pension. Of the 6 brothers who fought for the crown, 4 accepted the land offered to former military personnel and settled in Williamsburg, Dundas, Ontario. When Mathias and Margaret moved to Ontario, they settled in Williamsburg too.

Mathias purchased 200 acres of land from William Loucks, both men from Williamsburg, on 15 June 1816 for £200[1]. The property was known as all of lot 16 in the third concession in Matilda. When the crown decided to settle the area of Canada bordering the St. Lawrence River and New York State, they sent surveyors into the area to divide the property into lots of 200 acres. The land was first divided into long strips that were known as concessions and each concession was then divided into lots. There could be up to 25 to 30 lots in each concession; it depended upon the geography of the land. When you purchased all of a lot, you would be acquiring approximately 200 acres. After this purchase, Mathias is known as “from Matilda”.

Mathias purchased another 200 acres in Matilda for £75 on 11 October 1821 from David and Samuel Robertson[2]. This property was known as lot 12 in the fourth concession. On 12 June 1829 he purchased the front part of the West half of lot 12 in the third concession in Matilda or approximately 20 acres for £35[3].

Mathias was appointed administrator for the estate of John Duncan, a neighbor. John had contracted to purchase all of lot 12 in the third concession of Matilda from John Casselman of Williamsburg on 4 September 1828. John died before the transaction was finalized and Mathias completed the transaction for him on 18 Jun 1831[4].

I think Mathias transferred all of his property to his children before he died and therefore would not have left a will. I have found no evidence of a will in the land books of Dundas County. He sold part of his land to his son Simon Barkley for £100 on 29 Jan 1845. This sale consisted of half of lot 16, part of lot 12 in the 4^th concession and the 20 acres in lot 12 in the 3^rd concession[5]. Although I did not find a transfer of the East half of lot 16 in the 3^rd concession to anyone, it must have occurred because son Michael Barkley sold it at the same time that Simon sold the West half of the same lot[6].

I have identified 15 DNA matches where the most recent common ancestor couple is Matthew Barkley and Margaret Kock. The Barkleys are a great family to have in your family tree. Not only are they very fertile (Mathias and Margaret had 13 known children, all of whom married and reproduced. I counted 124 grandchildren for this couple.) but they are also very interested in genealogy. My direct ancestor is daughter Anna Maria, my third great grandmother. I have matches through sons Michael, Jacob, John, Henry, Gideon, Matthew, Simon, Daniel and daughters, Amy Margaret Mill and Eliza Beckstead.

Mary Fraser was born about 1775 in Albany County, New York and died in Sharon, Schoharie, New York between 1815 and 1820. Her parentage is unknown. She married about 1792 in New York Nicholas Winegard who was born in Albany County, New York about 1775 and died in Sharon on July 21, 1838.

Who was Mary Fraser and who were her parents? Was she of Dutch descent or German? Perhaps she was British or Scottish. Scots were beginning to immigrate. Many went to Ireland before coming to North America. I have never found one of her descendants who knows who Mary’s parents are. So, I decided to see if I can find any likely families for Mary in the Albany, NY area.

One thing I do know is her name. I have found baptisms for 4 of her 6 children. Three of her children were baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church at Coxsackie, Greene, New York. Anna was baptized there in 1793[1], parents were Nicholas and Maria Weyngaert and sponsors were Theunis and Catleyntje Withbeek (probably Witbeek). Who are Theunis and Catleyntje Witbeek -a lead to follow?

Peter was baptized at Coxsackie in 1798[2]. His parents were listed as Nicholas Wyngaart and Maria Frazier and his sponsors were Reuben Huntington and Margaret Frazier. Reuben Huntington and Margaret Frazier were married at this church in 1797. John was baptized in 1801[3] son of Nicholas Wyngaert and Mary Frasier. No sponsors were listed for John.

Daughter Margaret was baptized in 1794 at Zion Lutheran Church[4] in Loonenburg, Greene, New York (now the town of Athens). Her parents were listed as Nicholas Weyngarden and Maria Fraser. No sponsors were listed. Reuben and Margaret Huntington had a son, John Frasher Huntington, baptized in this church in 1799.

I feel that with all the activity around Southern Albany and Greene counties that I should concentrate my search for Mary’s parents in this area. My working hypothesis is that Margaret Fraser Huntington is Mary’s sister. Reuben Huntington was living in Coxsackie in 1790. By 1800 he had moved to Bethlehem, Albany, New York. Also living in Bethlehem in 1800 was William Fraser, over 45, who had a woman in his residence who was 26-45. He had 1 boy and 2 girls under 10, 1 boy and 1 girl 10-16 and 1 girl 16-26. This William Fraser is the right age to be the father of Margaret and Mary. To be over 45 in 1800, he would have been born before 1755.

I feel I have several good leads to follow. I may be able to come up with a family for Mary Fraser after all.

  i.             i. Anna Winegard. b. March 1793 in Albany County and baptized in Coxsackie on 31 March 1793. She married Simon Grosphint born 1795.

       ii.   Margaret Winegard. b. September 1794 in Albany County and baptized on 14 September 1794 in Loonenburg, New York. She married John Ball. John and Margaret Ball moved to Webster County, New York and in April 1837 they sold 1 acre of land to her brother, Abraham Winegard.

      iii.   Peter Winegard. b. 4 July 1798 in Albany County, d. 23 July 1858 in Williamsburg, Dundas, Ontario, Canada. He married on 25 March 1825 in Williamsburg Hannah McIntosh, born in 1809 and died in 1860.

      iv.   Catherine Winegard, b. about 1800 in Albany County, died before 1838. She married Peter Wilbur.

       v.   John Winegard, b. October 1801 in Albany County, baptized in Coxsackie on 10 October and d. 3 September 1858 in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario, Canada. He married Anna Maria Barkley on 16 August 1824 in New York. Anna Maria was born in Albany County on 8 December 1808 and d. in Oxford County, Ontario on 6 May 1865.

      vi.   Abraham Winegard, b. 6 October 1806 in New York, d. 18 April 1847 in Webster, New York. He married Maria Glover, b. 1806 and d. in 1870.

     vii.   William Winegard, b. between 1815 and 1820 in Sharon, New York.

Nicholas Winegard (1775-1838)

I haven’t posted one of my ancestor sketches in a while. Both Ancestry and My Heritage announced enhancements to their DNA tools. Ancestry developed Thru Lines which is a tool that links you with your matches. Ancestry looks at all the trees they have that relate to your ancestor and if they can piece together a path between your tree and your match’s tree, they do. Then it is up to you to verify and accept or not accept their analysis. Ancestry had a lot of proposed matches for me, so it took me a while to get through them.

     My Heritage had a similar idea and developed a tool they call “Theory of Family Relativity”. They fit together pieces of trees to form a path from a common ancestor to your tree and to your match’s tree. Since My Heritage is new to the DNA scene, I only had 10 “Theory of Family Relatively Matches" Both tools are very exciting and can cut down the amount of time necessary to find the common link. It is easier to validate information in a proposed link than it is to discover that link in the first place.

     Now, here is Nicholas Winegard’s story – so far.

Nicholas Winegard was born about 1775 in Albany County, New York and died in Sharon, Schoharie, New York on July 21, 1838. He is the son of Peter and Anna (Siberse) Wyngaart. He married about 1792 in New York Mary Fraser who was born in New York about 1775 and died in Sharon between 1815 and 1820. It was Nicholas and his brothers that Anglicized the spelling of the Wyngaart name.

Nicholas paid taxes in Coeymans, Albany, New York in 1803[1]. He owned property valued at $166 and paid 17 cents in taxes. During this period Nicholas and Mary had children baptized in Loonenburg and Coxsackie, New York. Both towns were originally part of Albany County but were transferred to the new Greene County in 1800. Coxsackie is very close to Coeymans. Both are on the west bank of the Hudson River.

By 1810 the family had moved to Sharon. Nicholas’ younger brother, Richard, had moved to Schoharie and purchased land for farming. Another brother, James, and his sister Elizabeth who was married to William Truax also moved to the area. In the 1810 census[2], Nicholas was enumerated with three males under 10, one male over 45, one female under 10, one female 10-16 and one female 26-45. This fits well with Nicholas and Mary’s known family. The three boys under 10 are Peter, John and Abraham, the daughter under 10 is Catherine and the daughter 10-16 is Margaret. Daughter Anna is not accounted for, but she would have been 17 and was probably either helping relatives or working.

On April 20, 1820 Nicholas purchased 78 acres from his brother Richard[3], consisting of lot 25 in the Skinner Patent. He was enumerated in 1820[4] in Sharon with 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 16-25, 1 male over 45 and 1 female 10-15. The young males are William born between 1815 and 1820 and Abraham born in 1806. The males 16-25 are Peter and John and Nicholas is the male over 45. I do not know who the female 10-15 is but she may be a niece come to help this all male household or an unrelated female hired to help with household chores. All of Nicholas’ daughters would be married by this time.

On November 10, 1829 Nicholas bought 40 acres of land from Ezekiel Smith[5] and his wife, being in lot 19 of the Stephen Skinner Patent.  This purchase and the one from 1820 were both recorded on December 22, 1829. In the 1830 census[6] Nicholas was enumerated with 1 male 10-14 (William), 1 male 20-29 (Abraham), 1 male 50-59 (Nicholas) and 1 female 20-29 (probably Abraham’s wife Maria Glover).

On July 14, 1838 Nicholas wrote his will[7]. He left all his land, his livestock, his household furnishings and his farming tools to his son William and gave his son Abraham $5. His daughters Anna (or Hannah) Grosphint and Margaret Ball each received $50 and 1 feather bed with bedding and the bedstead. He states that his daughter Caty Wilbur is deceased and bequeaths to her daughters Mary Ann and Margaret 1 feather bed with bedstead and bedding and $12. His sons Peter, John and William were to share his wearing apparel. He appointed his friend Benjamin Isham and son William as executors of his estate. He died one week later, and his will was submitted for probate on October 22, 1838[8]. His son William sold all the land in 1839 and followed his brother Abraham to Webster, Monroe, New York.

       v.   John Winegard, b. October 1801 in Albany County, baptized in Coxsackie on 10 October and d. 3 September 1858 in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario, Canada. He married Anna Maria Barkley on 16 August 1824 in New York. Anna Maria was born in Albany County on 8 December 1808 and d. in Oxford County, Ontario on 6 May 1865.

      vi.   Abraham Winegard, b. 6 October 1806 in New York, d. 18 April 1847 in Webster, New York. He married Maria Glover, b. 1806 and d. in 1870.

     vii.   William Winegard, b. between 1815 and 1820 in Sharon, New York.

Anna Katharina Carman (1771 – 1843)

Anna Katharina Carman was born 14 November 1771[i] in Johnstown, Fulton, New York and died in Matilda, Dundas, Ontario, Canada on 15 June 1843[ii]. Anna Katharina preferred to be called Katharine or Caty. She is the daughter of Michael and Maria Margaretha (Alterin) Carman. She married (1) in 1788 in Matilda, Peter Brouse, born 1 January 1764 in Johnstown and died in 1809 in Matilda and (2) about 1815, John Van Camp born 16 July 1766 in Newtown, Albany, New York and died 5 May 1851 in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario.

            As the daughter of a United Empire Loyalist, Katherine was entitled to a grant of 200 acres of land from the crown. She first applied in 1793[iii] and this first petition was approved but she never received an order for land. So, she reapplied in 1800[iv]. This second petition was also approved and resulted in an order for 200 acres.

            I have several DNA matches on Ancestry.com where the most recent common ancestral couple (MRCA) is Peter and Anna Katharina (Carman) Brouse. Of course, there is always a possibility that we have other ancestors in common but, so far, I have not identified any.
