Karel Francis Dobbelaere (1809-1890)

Karel Franciscus Dobbelaere, was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 18 December 1809¹ and died there on 21 April 1890². He was the son of Joannes Franciscus and Isabella Theresia (Van De Plassche) Dobbelaere. He married (1) on 9 January 1838 Coleta Den Trog,³ b. 30 December 1812 in Kaprijke and d, there 7 August 1845, (2) on 17 November 1847⁴ Maria Caroline Vermussche, b. 13 December 1810 in Kaprijke and d. there 12 Feb 1885 and (3) on 8 October 1885⁵ Natalie Coleta De Connick b, 27 January 1838 in Watervliet, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium.

I have found this family in the Population Registers for Kaprijke. In 1857⁶ the household consisted of Francis, 48, Marie Caroline, 47, Rosalie, 18, Marie Therese, 17, Seraphina, 15, Karel Louis, 13 and Bruno, 8. It is noted that on May 2, 1860 the family with the exception of Rosalie moved to Bassevelde. By 1867 the family was back in Kaprijke. The household in 1869⁷ consisted of Francis born 1806, married to Maria Vermussche; Maria born 1811 married to Francis; Charles, son of Francis born Jan 1843; Bruno, son of Francis born Mar 1849; Seraphina, daughter of Bruno born 1847 and married to Bruno Van Heysse; Bruno Van Heysse, born Feb 1839, farm worker and married to Seraphina Dobbelaere; children of Bruno and Seraphina, Marie Louise, Florentin, Julie, Charles Ludovinus, Julie Marie, Julius Bruno, Petrus, Julie Marie. This family liked the name Julie but none of their daughters with that name survived toddlerhood.

By 1880⁵ all of children had started households of their own. The household consisted of Francis and Maria until 1885 when it is noted that Maria died on February 12. Francis married for a third time on October 8, 1885 to Natalie De Connick who was born in Watervliet on January 27, 1837. This record also records the death of Francis on April 21, 1890.

Joannes Du Four (1791-1856)

Joannes Du Four was born in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium in July 1791. He was baptized in the Catholic Church there on 16 July 1791ⁱ, the son of Judocus and Helena (Van Schoonacker) Du Four. He died on 10 February 1856ⁱⁱ. He married Francisca Bernarda Caurvels about 1814 since their first child was born between 1814 and 1816. Francisca was the daughter of Petrus Joannes and Anna Maria (Van De Velde) Caurvels. She was baptized on 15 May 1794ⁱⁱⁱ in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo on 27 December 1862^iv.

Names in Flanders can be either in Latin, Dutch or French depending upon the time frame and who was recording the event. Names in Catholic Church records are always given in Latin at least in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. When Napoleon conquered Flanders, the official language became French so names were given in French in civil records from 1796 to 1815. So Joannes is the Latin form of John. The Dutch form is usually Jan and the French would be Jean.

This can cause some confusion. I have noted that as we approach the twentieth century, many names were Anglicized. Therefore, my grandmother's brother Carolus (Latin) or Karel (Dutch) began to be written as Charles in the early 1900's.

Both Joannes and Francisca were described in official documents as a workman or a work woman. This was the term used to describe a general laborer. Joannes may have worked in agriculture for one of his more well-to-do neighbors or he might have worked in one of the construction trades maintaining roads or dikes. Another common occupation in this period was as weaver. Generally the women would spin the thread and the men would weave the cloth. Weaving was a cottage industry and provided some necessary cash for many people. Belgium was particularly known for producing exquisite lace during this period. The coming of the industrial age and machine powered looms destroyed this industry and by the end of the nineteenth century, jobs were scarce in Flanders. This led to a large migration of Flemish people to the United States and Canada from about 1880 to 1910.^v
