Asenath Buck (1782-1825)

Asenath Buck was born probably in Sorel, Quebec mostly likely between 1780 and 1783. She was baptized in Sorel on 28 January 1789ⁱ. She died in Matilda, Dundas, Ontario probably about 1825. She married about 1803 John Baldwin born on 19 March 1774ⁱⁱ and died on 26 September 1846ⁱⁱⁱ in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario. She is the daughter of Samuel and Mehitable (McKay) Buck.

There are so many unknowns in Asenath’s life because she was born in the middle of the American Revolution while her parents were dealing with massive upheaval in their lives. Her father, Samuel, joined a Loyalist regiment (Butler’s Rangers), leaving her mother in Arlington, Vermont with 9 children ranging in age from 3 - 20. In 1778 the Vermont government confiscated Samuel Buck’s property in Arlington and escorted his wife and children to the British lines. Butler’s Rangers were garrisoned in Quebec from 1778 through the end of the war so the family probably settled in the Sorel area.

Based upon the births of her children and the age of her mother, I have estimated that Asenath was born between 1778 and 1783. Mehitable was probably born about 1735 in western Connecticut or Massachusetts. She married Samuel Buck in 1762 in New Milford, Connecticut^iv. If she was born in 1735, she would have been 45 in 1780. She had sisters born in 1734, 1740 and 1742 and she is generally believed to have been born in the 1735-1739 time period. So she could have had her youngest child in the 1778-1783 timeframe.

Many on line trees give 1789 as Asenath’s birth date because this is the date of her baptism. This is not a reasonable birth date for her based on the birth of her first child in October 1804. She would have been 15 at his birth and 14 at her marriage. This is highly unlikely. My observation in this location and this time period is that most women are over 20 before they marry. Asenath had her last child about 1824. She would have been 44 if she was born in 1783 and 47 if born in 1780. This is a reasonable age for a mother to give birth.

By 1798 the Buck family was in the Elizabethtown, Leeds, Ontario area. Her mother submitted a petition in July 1798^v to have her husband reinstated on the Loyalist list. For some reason, he was dropped from this list at least twice. When his reinstatement was approved both she and her son, Samuel Miles^vi submitted land petitions from Elizabethtown (that’s where the lawyers were) on 16 October 1798^vii. Samuel Miles Buck had already found land he liked in Edwardsburg, Grenville, Ontario. Also, Asenath’s sister, Sally had married John Faddle in Quebec and both John and Sally^viii had land grants in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario. Thus Asenath was in the right place to meet and marry John Baldwin.

Asenath submitted her own petition for a land grant on 30 October 1822^ix. In this petition she states she is the daughter of Samuel and Mehitable Buck and the wife of John Baldwin of Matilda. She was granted 200 acres in an area close to Lake Michigan. She died according to family records about 1825 and is probably buried in Matilda.

John Baldwin (1774-1846)

John Baldwin was born in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut on 19 March 1774ⁱ and died on 26 September 1846ⁱⁱ in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario. He is the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Porter) Baldwin. He married Asenath Buck about 1803 probably in either Edwardsburg, Grenville, Ontario or Matilda, Dundas, Ontario. Asenath Buck was born probably between 1780 and 1783 in Sorel, Quebec and died about 1825 in Matilda.

In the 1730’s John’s grandfather Thomas Baldwin moved his family to the Mansfield area from Billerica, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Thomas was a grandson of John Baldwin, one of the original settlers of Billerica.

In his comprehensive biography of the Baldwin family, “The Baldwin Genealogy from 1500 to 1881”ⁱⁱⁱ, Charles Candee Baldwin noted that John went to Canada. In the mid-eighteenth century, settlers in New England and their sons were looking West for new land to farm. The Baldwins were no exception. Three of Joseph’s brothers, Eleazar^iv, Asa^v and Benjamin^vi, all moved to the Dorset, Vermont area. By 1775, Joseph’s son, Silas^vii had moved there also. Joseph and his wife were in Vermont in the late 1770’s but did not make Vermont their permanent home and eventually returned to Connecticut. Vermont is hilly and very rocky so agriculture there is difficult. After the Revolutionary War, the Baldwins were engaged in logging and made their way from Vermont into Saint Lawrence County, New York. John’s nephew Silas^viii, son of brother Silas, made Canton, New York his permanent home as did two of his nieces. His Uncle Eleazar’s sons and grandsons settled in St. Lawrence County, New York and Eleazar III lived in Canada for a time^ix. One of his sons and two of his daughters were born there. In the 1830, there was civil unrest in Canada and Eleazar III moved his family back to the US, settling in Michigan.

John was undoubtedly one of this group of Baldwins who logged in upper New York State and probably went with his cousin Eleazar into Canada. He found a home there in Dundas County and settled down. His descendants reported that he was from New York. This was true since he lived in New York for a time before moving into Canada and he had relatives a short distance across the St. Lawrence River but it was only part of the story.

I have not been able to find any written evidence in Canada linking John to Joseph and Elizabeth Baldwin and a birth in Connecticut but I do have DNA evidence. I have an atDNA match to descendants of three of Thomas Baldwin’s children, daughter Aurora, and sons William H. and Silas. Thomas is a twin brother to John. I also match a descendant through Joseph’s son Silas Baldwin who married Priscilla Cary. Also I have at least 2 matches through 2 descendants of Thomas and Dorothy (Kidder) Baldwin, Joseph’s parents, and I match a descendant of one of Dorothy Kidder’s sisters. This is a total of 7 matches to this Baldwin line and I haven’t looked recently. I probably have more now.

John’s will^x, which was transcribed into the Dundas County, Ontario Deed Book D, mentions his sons, Daniel, John, Thomas, George, William, Silas and Ezra and daughters Mary Reid and Sarah Brown. His real property was given to his two youngest sons, Silas and Ezra with bequests to the other children.

Sophia De Vriese (1818-1857)

Sophiia De Vriese was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen (East Flanders), Belgium on 10 Jun 1818¹ and died in Eeklo, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 1 January 1857². She was the daughter of Joannes Franciscus and Joanna Livinia (De Beir) De Vriese. She married on 6 May 1846 in Eeklo Jan Baptiste Cobert³ born on 19 May 1817 in Eeklo, and died in Lembeke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 30 Apr 1890.

At her marriage in 1846, Sophie gave her occupation as a maid servant and Jan was listed as a workman. This couple was married 9 years and had 4 children only one of whom outlived them. Life was very precarious for children in the mid nineteenth century.

Sophie is listed in the 1847 population register for Eeklo⁴. She is living with her husband Jan Cobert and her children. The children’s births and deaths are enumerated here as is Sophie’s death in 1857.

Sophie is in my direct female line. Therefore her mitochondrial haplogroup is J1c2c2.

Jan Baptiste Cobert (1817-1890)

Jan Baptiste Cobert was born in Eeklo, Oost Vlaanderen (East Flanders), Belgium on 19 May 1817¹ and died in Lembeke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 30 April 1890². He was the son of Bernardus and Caroline Therese (Van De Velde) Cobert. He married (1) on 6 May 1846 in Eeklo Sophie De Vriese³ born on 10 June 1818 in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died in Eeklo on 1 January 1857 and (2) on 7 October 1857 in Eeklo Seraphina Saffryn⁴ born 11 January 1824 in Adegem, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium.

I decided to try and find the entry in the population registers for this family. I hoped to find evidence of when and where Jan Baptiste died. Population registers list every member of the household, when and where they were born, the date they left this household and where they went, and a death date is given for anyone who died during the period. These registers cover a 10 year period and start in 1847. The period beginning in 1866 went all the way to 1880 so that the registers could start and end on the decade.

Eeklo is a fairly large town which made finding an entry for one family a challenge. For the period beginning in 1847 there are a total of 10 books of records encompassing approximately 2500 images. Add to this the persnickety document viewer available on Family Search and it took me about a week to find this family. I finally found them in book 7. Fortunately, all other 10 year periods had a table so it was possible to locate the family by book and page number.

In 1847⁵, Jan Baptiste is living with his first wife, Sophie De Vriese and their four children. Three of their four children died as infants or toddlers, a sad fact of life in the nineteenth century. Jan Baptiste is a weaver and Sophie is a spinner. Sophie died on 1 January 1857 and this is noted in the book. Before the year ended Jan Baptiste had remarried and his new wife is listed there as well.

In 1857⁶ Jan Baptiste, Sophie and Florence are listed as well as Seraphina and their 5 children. It is noted that Florence moved to Knesselaere on 12 January 1866. Before her marriage, Florence was a maid. The 1880⁷ book lists Jan Baptiste’s occupation as farmer and notes that the family moved to Lembeke on 19 January 1884. In Lembeke for the 1880⁸ period, I noted that the Coberts arrived on 20 January 1884 and that Jan Baptiste is still a farmer. His death in Lembeke is noted on 30 April 1890. The family began to go their own ways in the 1880’s. Amelia was the first to leave moving to Kaprijke on 23 January 1886. Desire moved to Oosteeklo on 24 January 1891 and married there. Petrus married in 1890 and moved to Kaprijke. In April 1891 Seraphina, Auguste and Emma Marie moved back to Eeklo. All of these places are close together in Oost Vlaanderen.

Marie Caroline Vermussche (1810-1885)

Marie Caroline Vermussche was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 13 December 1810¹ and died there on 12 February 1885². She was the daughter of Engelbertus and Joanna Theresia (De Vos) Vermussche or Vermissche. She married on 17 November 1847³ Carolus Franciscus Dobbelaere, b. 18 December 1809 in Kaprijke and died. there on 21 April 1890.

I have found this family in the Population Registers for Kaprijke. In 1857⁴ the household consisted of Francis, 48, Marie Caroline, 47, Rosalie, 18, Marie Therese, 17, Seraphina, 15, Karel Louis, 13 and Bruno, 8. It is noted that on May 2, 1860 the family with the exception of Rosalie moved to Bassevelde. By 1867 the family was back in Kaprijke. The household in 1869⁵ consisted of Francis born 1806, married to Maria Vermussche; Maria born 1811 married to Francis; Charles, son of Francis born Jan 1843; Bruno, son of Francis born Mar 1849; Seraphina, daughter of Bruno born 1847 and married to Bruno Van Heysse; Bruno Van Heysse, born Feb 1839, farm worker and married to Seraphina Dobbelaere; children of Bruno and Seraphina, Marie Louise, Florentin, Julie, Charles Ludovinus, Julie Marie, Julius Bruno, Petrus, Julie Marie. This family liked the name Julie but none of their daughters with that name survived toddlerhood.

By 1880⁵ all of children had started households of their own. The household consisted of Francis and Maria until 1885 when it is noted that Maria died on February 12.
