Catherine Maria Van Camp (1856-1929)

Catherine MariaVan Camp, was born in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario, Canada on 24 September 1856 and died in Spokane, Spokane, Washington on 8 June, 1929. She was the daughter of Reuben Elijah and Charity (Winegard) Van Camp. She married Abraham Wynne in Merrickville, Grenville, Ontario, Canada on 16 January 1877. Abraham was born on 16 October 1849 in Montague, Lanark, Ontario and died in St. Thomas, Pembina, North Dakota on 1 October 1928.

Catherine grew up in Dundas County¹ in a little community know as Van Camp Mills². Sometime before 1871 the family moved to Grenville County³ to the community of Oxford. At the age of 18 she began teaching in the local schools. She got a job in Merrickville where she met Abraham Wynne. After her marriage she moved to Renfrew, Ontario⁴ where her husband was farming. All of her children were born here.

In 1886 the family decided to follow her father and move to North Dakota. They went by train and settled close to the Red River in St. Thomas. Abraham purchased 320 acres of farm land and a lot in town where he placed his residence⁵. Here is where they remained for the rest of their lives. When World War I came along, Catherine volunteered as knitting supervisor for the local Red Cross. The women and children of St. Thomas knitted wool socks for the servicemen.

After the death of her husband, she decided to go to Spokane to spend the winter with her daughter Belle who was an English teacher in the Spokane High School. She became ill and died in June 1929. She is buried in St. Thomas City Cemetery with her husband.

Abraham Wynne (1849-1928)

Abraham Wynne was born in Montague, Lanark, Ontario, Canada on 16 October 1849 and died in St. Thomas, Pembina, North Dakota on 1 October, 1928. He was the son of Edward and Catherine (Shannon) Wynne. He married Catherine Maria Van Camp in Merrickville, Grenville, Ontario, Canada on 16 January 1877. She was born on 24 September 1856 in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario and died in Spokane, Spokane, Washington on 8 June 1929.

There is no document that gives us a definitive date for his birth. Family records list October 16 but there is some confusion about the year. His birth year ranges from 1848 – 1851. I have made a table listing the calculated birth year and the source for that calculation.

I have settled on 1849 as the most likely date. First of all it is the one that is most consistently cited. The 1861 census was taken on 16 Jan 1861 and the question asked was the age of each inhabitant on his or her next birthday. Abraham’s age is listed as 12. Since he would have been 12 in 1861, that means he was born in 1849. He fits nicely between his sister Sarah who was born in 1847 and his brother Edward who was born in 1851.The 1848 date on his death certificate is probably due to a misunderstanding between the person taking down the information and his wife who was listed as informant. Abraham died 15 days before his birthday. I can see Catherine thinking he would be 79 in 15 days, stating that fact and causing confusion in the mind of the official.

Abraham grew up on his father’s farm in Montague. He was the sixth of fourteen children. Edward Wynne received a patent from the crown in 1845 for 100 acres in Montague. If he was like most of the other settlers in this region, he probably started farming on his lot before he applied for a patent. This family lived on lot 6 in the 2^nd concession. Unfortunately, concession 2 returns have not survived for the 1851 census for Montague.

I have not been able to identify Abraham positively in the 1871 census. He may have been in Wellington County. But by 1875 he was back in Lanark where he witnessed a mortgage agreement for his parents. After his marriage, he farmed in Renfrew County until 1886 when he moved his family to St. Thomas. He bought 320 acres of farmland and a lot in town where he and his family lived. My father liked to visit his grandparents and lived with them for a year so he could go to high school. It was common for farm children to have to board with a town person in order to complete their public education. In the early 20^th century roads were not good and transportation 15 miles to and from school on a daily basis was not an option.

Abraham was naturalized in 1891 according to the 1920 census. This action would have effectively naturalized his wife and 3 minor children. The family soon became part of the St. Thomas community and Abraham served for many years on the school board. I have inherited his Bible presented to him on March 17, 1876 "by his affectionate mother" and his black bowler hat which he wore most of the time.

Catherine Elizabeth Tweed (1850-1929)

Catherine Elizabeth Tweed, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Grue) Tweed, was born in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario on July 1, 1850 and died in Galva, Ida, Iowa on February 7, 1929ⁱ. She married on July 16, 1874ⁱⁱ in South Gower, Grenville, Ontario, William Reuben Baldwin, born in Mountain on January 9, 1848 and died on May 16, 1911 in St. Thomas, Pembina, North Dakota. He was the son of Daniel and Ellen (Wilson) Baldwin.

Catherine Elizabeth, who went by her middle name, lost her mother when she was an infant. Her mother died sometime between her birth and the 1851 Canadian censusⁱⁱⁱ which was taken on January 12, 1852. At this time her father stated that he was a widower. Elizabeth, age 2, was living with her father, 25, brothers James, 6, and William, 4, and an older Tweed couple, Thomas, 75 and Sarah, 65. I had thought that Thomas and Sarah might be her grandparents but I have doubts about this relationship. In 1861 she is still living in Mountain^iv with her family but by 1870 she is in Erie, Erie, Pennsylvania^v living with her brother James and his wife, Martha.

The family story is that Lizzie went back to Ontario to visit friends and became reacquainted with Willie Baldwin. They fell in love and married. After her marriage, she settled on the Baldwin farm and began to raise a family. In 1881^vi, she and Willie have 3 young sons and are living with his parents. His father, Daniel Baldwin, died in 1886 and his mother, Ellen, went to live with her daughter, Sarah Van Camp. At this time, North Dakota, among other states, was advertising heavily in the eastern states and Canadian provinces prompting many to pull up roots and head west. Willie and Lizzie were in that number. On February 13, 1889 they sold their farm, packed up the family, which now numbered six children, and took the west bound train. They arrived at Neche, North Dakota in March 1889 and made their way about 30 miles south to St. Thomas. Here William purchased farm land and with his sons began to farm.

In 1900, the family is living in St. Thomas^vii. William, age 52 is head of household and has been married for 25 years. His wife, Catherine E., age 48 is the mother of 10 children, 9 of them still living. This is the only indication I have found that she may have had a child who died young. Their children include Cyrus, 24, Silas, 20, Lulu, 18, Fred, 16, Maud E.,13, Lelah E., 8, Sarah E., 6, and Florence G., 3. The three youngest girls were born in North Dakota. Second son, Daniel is married and heads his own household. In 1910, the family is still in North Dakota^viii. The sons have all left the household. Residents are William, 62, Elizabeth, 60, Lulu, 28, Elma, 23, Leila, 19, Ethel, 17 and Florence, 14.

Willie died of throat cancer in 1911 and sometime after that, Elizabeth went to live in Iowa with her daughter Lelah. She appears in their household in 1920^ix. She died in Iowa in 1929 after having a stroke and is buried with her husband in the Saint Thomas City Cemetery.

William Reuben Baldwin (1848-1911)

William Reuben Baldwin, the son of Daniel and Ellen (Wilson) Baldwin, was born in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario on January 9, 1848 and died in Saint Thomas, Pembina, North Dakota on May 16,1911. He married on July 16, 1874ⁱ in South Gower, Grenville, Ontario, Catherine Elizabeth Tweed, born in Mountain on July 1, 1850 and died on February 7, 1929ⁱⁱ in Galva, Ida, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Grue) Tweed.

William is enumerated with his parents in both the 1851 and 1861 Canadian censusⁱⁱⁱ. After his marriage to Catherine Elizabeth (often called “Lizzy” or “Lisabet”), he settled on the family farm to raise his family. Enumerated in the 1881^iv census were William Baldwin, age 33, Elizabeth, 30, Cyrus E., 5, Daniel, 3, Silas J., 1, Daniel, 77 and Helena, 73. All claim to be born in Ontario and all consider themselves to be of English descent except for Elizabeth and Helena who claim to be Irish.

In January 1874 William purchased 18 acres in lot 13 in the 4^th concession of Mountain Township from James William Hutt^v. Under his father’s will^vi he inherited the East quarter of lot 13 in the 4^th concession of Mountain Township. His father, Daniel Baldwin, died in 1886 and his mother, Ellen, went to live with her daughter, Sarah Van Camp. At this time, North Dakota, among other states, was advertising heavily in the eastern states and Canadian provinces prompting many to pull up roots and head west. Willie was in that number. On February 13, 1889 he sold the land^vii he inherited from his father, the 18 acres he purchased in 1874 and the Southwest corner of lot 16 in the 6^th concession to Ralph Nash. He and Lizzie packed up the family, which now numbered six children, and took the west bound train. They arrived at Neche, North Dakota in March 1889 and made their way about 30 miles south to St. Thomas. Here William purchased farm land and with his sons began to farm. He purchased 160 acres (quarter section) in Midland Township and 160 acres in Saint Thomas Township.

Willie filed his first papers for US citizenship on June 23, 1893 in Cavalier, North Dakota. Dan O’Connor and Joseph Childerhose were witnesses to his character when he became a US citizen on October 30, 1896 in the District Court in the 7^th Judicial District sitting in Pembina County^viii.

He opened a farm equipment dealership in St. Thomas with his sons, called W.R. Baldwin & Sons. Unfortunately, the business burned to the ground but it gave his son Daniel enough knowledge to manage two different equipment and feed stores.

In 1900, the family is living in St. Thomas^ix. William, age 52 is head of household and has been married for 25 years. His wife, Catherine E., age 48 is the mother of 10 children, 9 of them still living. His children include Cyrus, 24, Silas, 20, Lulu, 18, Fred, 16, Maud E.,13, Lelah E., 8, Sarah E., 6, and Florence G., 3. The three youngest girls were born in North Dakota. Willie suffered from throat cancer. He had been to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota several times, had 3 surgeries performed but nothing stopped the growth of the cancer. He died in May 1911. His obituary in The Saint Thomas Times described him as “a man of generous impulses, kindly disposition and high ideals.”^xi He is buried in Saint Thomas City Cemetery^xii. His descendants still farm in Saint Thomas.

After her husband’s death, Catherine made her home with her daughter, Lelah, and family. She appears in their household in 1920^xiii. She died in Iowa in 1929 after having a stroke and is buried with her husband in the Saint Thomas City Cemetery.
