Joanna Theresia De Vos (1769-1821)

Joanna Theresia De Vos was born on 5 May 1769ⁱ in Lembecke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died on 8 Jan 1821ⁱⁱ in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium. She was the daughter of Simon and Maria Jacoba (Van Vooren) De Vos. She married on 2 May 1795ⁱⁱⁱ in Kaprijke Engelbert Vermussche born about 1768 in Kaprijke and died after 1847.

Joanna was a spinner, a woman who spun fibers to create thread that could then be used to make cloth. She was also literate; she signed her name in the parish register when she married. I don't know enough about Flemish culture in the late 18^th century to speculate about what this says about the De Vos family and their circumstances. But I do know that it is very unusual to have an ancestor who can sign her name. To find the signature of a third great grandmother is a real thrill.

Engelbert Vermussche (Circa 1767-After 1847)

Engelbert Vermussche (Vermissche) was born about 1768ⁱ in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died after 1847ⁱⁱ. He was the son of Joannes and Maria Jacoba (Vleeschouwers) Vermussche. He married on 2 May 1795ⁱⁱⁱ in Kaprijke Joanna Theresia De Vos born 5 May 1769^iv in Lembecke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died in Kaprijke on 8 January 1821^v. Engelbert was a thatcher, a roofer who used straw to roof houses.

It is likely that we are missing some of the children of this couple. Angelina was born in 1796 and the next child, Petronella, was born in 1803. This is a 7 year gap which spans the initiation of civil birth, death and marriage registrations in Belgium. There very well may be 1 or more children in these records that I have not found. Angelina’s birth was recorded in the parish baptismal register. Her sponsors were listed as Simon De Vos, her mother’s father and Jacoba de Vleeschouwers, her father’s mother.

i I have been unable to locate a baptismal record for Engelbert. His marriage record states that he was baptized in Kaprijke and he was 26 years old. At the baptism of his daughter Angelina he was 28 years old and at the death of his wife, he was 52 years old. This puts his birth year at 1768 or 1769. Since he is always said to be 1 – 2 years older than his wife and we do have a baptismal record for her, I have settled on 1768 as a reasonable birth date for him.

ii He was living and present at the marriage of his daughter Marie Caroline to Carolus Dobbelaere on 17 Nov 1847.

Isabella Theresia Van De Plassche (1786-1850)

Isabella Theresa Van De Plassche was born in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 13 January 1786 and baptized the same dayⁱ. She died in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 21 January 1850ⁱⁱ. She was the daughter of Joannes and Joanna Lavinia (Sierens) Van De Plassche. She married on 7 February 1806ⁱⁱⁱ in Kaprijke Joannes Franciscus Dobbelaere born on 19 February 1778^iv in Kaprijke and died there on 25 December 1829^v.

Isabella was a spinner of thread used in making cloth. Cloth making was a cottage industry in Belgium into the early nineteenth century when factories took over the industry.

Joannes Franciscus Dobbelaere was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 19 February 1778 and baptized on 20 Februaryⁱ. He died there on 25 December 1829ⁱⁱ. He was the son of Petrus Joannes and Joanna Theresia (Van Gansbeke) Dobbelaere. He married on 7 February 1806ⁱⁱⁱ in Kaprijke Isabella Theresa Van De Plassche born on 13 January 1786^iv in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died in Kaprijke on 21 January 1850^v.

I do not know much about Jan. His mother died when he was 4, a hard time for a child to lose his mother but fortunately his father lived to see his children into adulthood. He was a weaver by trade.
