Helena Van Schoonacker (1768-1796)

Helena Van Schoonacker was born in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 18 July 1768ⁱ and baptized the same day. She died in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on the 24^th day of Nivose in the 5^th year of the French Republicⁱⁱ which I believe equates to 25 December 1796. Helena was the daughter of Joannes and Joanne Maria (De Rever) Van Schoonacker. She married Judocus Du Four on 13 June 1789ⁱⁱⁱ in Sint-Jan-in-Ereno. He was born in Sint Laureins on 7 March 1758^iv and died in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo on the 14^th day of Vendemarie in the 12 year of the French Republic^v or 21 September 1803.

Helena died at age 29. By this time she had had 5 children and buried at least 2 of them. (I have been unable to determine the fate of son Judocus.) This was life in the 18^th and 19^th centuries where childhood diseases were prevalent and there were no effective treatments. Two of her children reached adulthood and married. One of them, John Francis (in English) or Jan Francis (in Dutch) or Joannes Franciscus (in Latin) is my great great grandfather.

Judocus Du Four (1758-1803)

Judocus Du Four was born in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 7 March 1758ⁱ and baptized the same day. He died in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on the 14^th day of Vendemarie in the 12^th year of the French Republicⁱⁱ which I believe equates to 21 September 1803. Judocus was the son of Petrus Joannes and Isabella (Dimmevet) Du Four. He married Helena Van Schoonacker on 13 Jun 1789ⁱⁱⁱ in Sint-Jan-in-Ereno, She was born in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo on 18 Jul 1768^iv and died in Sint Laureins on 25 Dec 1796^v (or the 24^th of Nivose in the 5^th year of the French Republic).

Researching in Belgium in the period from 1796 to 1810 can be a challenge. FamilySearch.org has filmed church records from about 1600 to 1796 when civil registration begins. The early civil records are difficult to read and are not indexed. Indexing began about 1810 and clerks began to either write the individual’s name in the margin or write the name in a larger darker form within the record so it becomes easier to scan the records looking for your person of interest. Here is where looking at all records for all children paid off for me.

I was looking through death records and came across Maria Jacoba Du Four. Her death record indicated that she was a daughter of Judocus and Helena Du Four. I did not have her on my list of children. She was 36 when she died making her birth date about 1796. This is the transition area for records. I looked through the civil registrations for births in 1796 but could not identify her birth record. I decided to see if she married and I got lucky. Not only did it give her birth date and place but it told me her parents were deceased and where and when they died. With this information, I was able to find Judocus’ death record but not Helena’s.

Maria Teirlinck (1773-1846)

Maria Teirlinck was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 16 February 1773ⁱ and died there on 10 March 1846ⁱⁱ. She was the daughter of Judocus and Judoca (DeKuyper) Teirlinck. She married on 2 May 1792ⁱⁱⁱ Joseph Hecke who was born in Kaprijke on 9 September 1765 and died there on 28 May 1825.

When I looked for Maria’s baptismal date, I could not find any baptisms for a baby named Maria whose parents were Judocus and Judoca DeKuyper in the 1773 time period. Judocus and Judoca did have a daughter baptized in 1773 but her listed name was Joanna Francisca. Maria has never been called anything other than Maria. She married as Maria Teirlinck. When her children were baptized, she was identified as their mother, Maria Teirlinck. In her husband’s death registration, his wife is listed as Maria Francisca Teirlinck. And in her own death registration, she is identified as Maria Teirlinck. Additionally, one of the sponsors at her baptism was Maria Francisca De Gutter. It was common to name a child after her baptismal sponsor in this time period. I also looked through deaths and marriages in the church tables and did not find any Joanna listed consistent with her 1773 birth. I think when the priest entered this information, he recorded an incorrect name for the infant and this is the baptismal record for Maria.

Joseph Hecke (1765-1825)

Joseph Hecke or Eecke was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 9 September 1765ⁱ and died there on 28 May 1825ⁱⁱ. He was the son of Petrus and Joanna Agatha (Debouver) Hecke. He married on 2 May 1792 Maria Teirlinckⁱⁱⁱ who was born in Kaprijke on 16 February 1773 and died there on 10 March 1846.

I have been identifying children for each couple using the table of baptisms for the church in each community. Most of these tables, which can be found on FamilySearch.org, list the child’s name, the father’s name and the mother’s maiden name. These tables were constructed by town officials in the 1870’s. Like any finding aid, there are going to be errors. Additionally, these church records start when the local church began keeping records and end when civil birth records were instituted in 1796. So this list of children may not include all of them. For instance, Petrus Joannes Hecke was born in 1801. His baptism is listed in the baptismal table but the actual clerical record was not filmed by FamilySearch and I could not locate a civil registration for him in Kaprijke. However, I did locate a civil death registration for him.

Maria Petronella Bultinck was born in Lembecke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium about 3 October 1768 (baptismal date)ⁱ and died in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 30 September 1825ⁱⁱ. She was the daughter of Francis and Caroline Theresa (Van Waes) Bultinck. She married on 12 May 1792 in Lembekeⁱⁱⁱ Joris Francis Van De Veire born 24 February 1764 in Oosteeklo, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died 7 December 1839 in Kaprijke.

Joris Francis Van De Veire (1764-1839)

Joris Franciscus Van De Veire was born in Oosteeklo, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium about 24 February 1764 (baptismal date)¹ and died in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 7 December 1839². He was the son of Judocus and Livina (Pyckevet) Van De Veire. He married on 12 May 1792 in Lembeke³, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium Maria Petronella Bultinck born 3 Oct 1768 in Lembeke and died 30 September 1825 in Kaprijke.

Joris, which is Dutch for George, was a weaver, a common occupation in Belgium in the eighteenth century. Production of fine cloth and lace for decorating clothing was a cottage industry that provided cash for things that could not be produced.

Just about everything I know about this man is included in that first paragraph. But those few facts are not easy to come by. The Family History Library has film for church records starting about 1600 and going to 1796 when civil registration became the law. They have had civil records from 1796 to 1870 for several years and have recently added records through 1920. Catholic church records are in Latin and the civil records are in either French (during Napoleon's reign) or Dutch. Then just to make it interesting throw in the changing styles of hand writing during that 300 year span and things can be very frustrating. Fortunately, the church records and the civil records have mostly been indexed. You can usually find a tienjarige tafel (10 year table) somewhere on the film. And for the benefit of the clerks in the town hall, there is usually an index at the end of each year as well. I am very thankful that most of these films have been digitized and are available from the comfort of my home.

Anna Maria Barkley (1808-1865)

Anna Maria Barkley was born in Albany County, New York on 18 December 1808 and died in Oxford County, Ontario on 6 May 1865. She was baptized in St. Paul’s Lutheran Churchⁱ in Berne, Albany, New York on 12 Mar 1809. She is the daughter of Mathias and Margaret (Koch or Kock) Barkley. She married 1) on 16 August 1824 John Winegard born on 10 October 1801 in Albany County, New York and died in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario, Canada on September 3, 1858 and 2) on 4 Jun 1860ⁱⁱ in Mountain William Taylor born about 1808 in Ireland.

The Barkleys are a German Palatine family. Eberhard Buercklin and his family came to North America from Baden-Wuerttemberg to farm on Rensselaer’s estate in Albany County. As the English speaking officials began adding this family to historical records, the name became Barkley, Berkley, Barclay and even Perkly. Perkly is the only one not found in Eberhard’s descendants.

John and Anna Maria lived in New York for about the first 20 years of their marriage. They had 6, possibly 7 children, born in New York. In 1830 they were enumerated in Westerlo, Albany Countyⁱⁱⁱ – 1 male under 5, 1 male 30-39, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-29. The female under 5 was Margaret, the older male and female were Maria and John but the male under 5 has not been identified. There is a 7 year span between Margaret’s birth and the next child, Charity, so it is highly likely they had another child who died young.

The family moved to Mountain sometime after April 1841 when daughter Mary J. was born and before 1845 when son Mathias was born. Anna Maria’s parents and all of her siblings were living there.

They are enumerated in the 1851 census^iv of Upper Canada living in Mountain. The family consisted of John, Mariah, Charity, Abraham, Amy, Polly, Mary J., Matthias and Isaac J. Daughter Margaret had married in 1846. After John’s death in 1858, Anna Maria married and moved with her husband to East Nissouri, Oxford County, Ontario. She is enumerated there in the 1861 census^v.

I have autosomal DNA matches that point to John Winegard and Anna Maria Barkley as the most recent common ancestral couple. Charity Winegard is my great great grandmother. I have Ancestry DNA matches to descendants of four of her siblings - her sister Margaret through her son Adam Barkley, her sister Mary J. through her son James Jackson, her sister Polly through her son Edward Jesse Lennox and her brother Abraham through daughter Gertrude’s son Herbert Wadleigh and through daughter Lillian’s son James Park.
