Joanna Theresia De Vos (1769-1821)

Joanna Theresia De Vos was born on 5 May 1769ⁱ in Lembecke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died on 8 Jan 1821ⁱⁱ in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium. She was the daughter of Simon and Maria Jacoba (Van Vooren) De Vos. She married on 2 May 1795ⁱⁱⁱ in Kaprijke Engelbert Vermussche born about 1768 in Kaprijke and died after 1847.

Joanna was a spinner, a woman who spun fibers to create thread that could then be used to make cloth. She was also literate; she signed her name in the parish register when she married. I don't know enough about Flemish culture in the late 18^th century to speculate about what this says about the De Vos family and their circumstances. But I do know that it is very unusual to have an ancestor who can sign her name. To find the signature of a third great grandmother is a real thrill.

Engelbert Vermussche (Circa 1767-After 1847)

Engelbert Vermussche (Vermissche) was born about 1768ⁱ in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died after 1847ⁱⁱ. He was the son of Joannes and Maria Jacoba (Vleeschouwers) Vermussche. He married on 2 May 1795ⁱⁱⁱ in Kaprijke Joanna Theresia De Vos born 5 May 1769^iv in Lembecke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died in Kaprijke on 8 January 1821^v. Engelbert was a thatcher, a roofer who used straw to roof houses.

It is likely that we are missing some of the children of this couple. Angelina was born in 1796 and the next child, Petronella, was born in 1803. This is a 7 year gap which spans the initiation of civil birth, death and marriage registrations in Belgium. There very well may be 1 or more children in these records that I have not found. Angelina’s birth was recorded in the parish baptismal register. Her sponsors were listed as Simon De Vos, her mother’s father and Jacoba de Vleeschouwers, her father’s mother.

i I have been unable to locate a baptismal record for Engelbert. His marriage record states that he was baptized in Kaprijke and he was 26 years old. At the baptism of his daughter Angelina he was 28 years old and at the death of his wife, he was 52 years old. This puts his birth year at 1768 or 1769. Since he is always said to be 1 – 2 years older than his wife and we do have a baptismal record for her, I have settled on 1768 as a reasonable birth date for him.

ii He was living and present at the marriage of his daughter Marie Caroline to Carolus Dobbelaere on 17 Nov 1847.

Isabella Theresa Van De Plassche was born in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 13 January 1786 and baptized the same dayⁱ. She died in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 21 January 1850ⁱⁱ. She was the daughter of Joannes and Joanna Lavinia (Sierens) Van De Plassche. She married on 7 February 1806ⁱⁱⁱ in Kaprijke Joannes Franciscus Dobbelaere born on 19 February 1778^iv in Kaprijke and died there on 25 December 1829^v.

Isabella was a spinner of thread used in making cloth. Cloth making was a cottage industry in Belgium into the early nineteenth century when factories took over the industry.

Joannes Franciscus Dobbelaere was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 19 February 1778 and baptized on 20 Februaryⁱ. He died there on 25 December 1829ⁱⁱ. He was the son of Petrus Joannes and Joanna Theresia (Van Gansbeke) Dobbelaere. He married on 7 February 1806ⁱⁱⁱ in Kaprijke Isabella Theresa Van De Plassche born on 13 January 1786^iv in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium and died in Kaprijke on 21 January 1850^v.

I do not know much about Jan. His mother died when he was 4, a hard time for a child to lose his mother but fortunately his father lived to see his children into adulthood. He was a weaver by trade.

Anna Maria Van De Velde (1758-?)

Anna Maria Van De Velde was born in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 24 April 1758ⁱ and baptized the next day. She was the daughter of Joannes Cornelius and Elizabeth (Denevet or Denewet) Van De Velde. She married Petrus Joannes Caurvels on 8 May 1786ⁱⁱ in Sint Laureins. He was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 20 Dec 1755ⁱⁱⁱ and died there on 24 Apr 1805^iv.

The couple lived in Sint Laureins where they baptized 3 daughters in 1788, 1790 and 1794. Then they moved to Kaprijke and had 2 more daughters. After her husband’s death, she continued to live in Kaprijke at least until 1811. I have been unable to locate a death record for Anna Maria.

Petrus Joannes Caurvels (1755-1805)

Petrus Joannes Caurvels was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 20 December 1755ⁱ and baptized the same day. He died in Kaprijke on 23 April 1805ⁱⁱ. He was the son of Judocus and Elizabeth (Caurvels) Caurvels. Petrus Joannes married Anna Maria Van De Velde on 8 May 1786ⁱⁱⁱ in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium. Anna Maria was born in Sint Laureins on 24 Apr 1758^iv.

The couple lived in Sint Laureins where they baptized 3 daughters in 1788, 1790 and 1794. Then there were no more children. I thought it was odd considering it was the eighteenth century and they were still relatively young. I could not find any death record for Petrus or Anna Maria in Sint Laureins. So I decided to see if they moved to Sint-Jan–in-Eremo. I have noticed that there is a lot of moving back and forth between these 2 towns.

I did not find any births or deaths in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo but I did find a wedding for eldest daughter Maria Jacoba and Livin De Vriese. This occurred on 3 May 1811^v. The marriage registration always gives information on the parents of the bride and groom. I discovered that Petrus Caurvels had did in Kaprijke on 4 Floreal in the 8^th year of the French Republic and her mother Anna Maria Van De Velde lived in Kaprijke and was present at the wedding.

I checked Kaprijke records and found 2 more daughters born there in 1796 and 1799 and also the death of Petrus Caurvels on 4 Floreal year 8 as reported. I have still not been able to find a death date for Anna Maria nor a marriage record for Francisca Bernarda and Joannes Franciscus Du Four. I will keep looking.

Helena Van Schoonacker (1768-1796)

Helena Van Schoonacker was born in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 18 July 1768ⁱ and baptized the same day. She died in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on the 24^th day of Nivose in the 5^th year of the French Republicⁱⁱ which I believe equates to 25 December 1796. Helena was the daughter of Joannes and Joanne Maria (De Rever) Van Schoonacker. She married Judocus Du Four on 13 June 1789ⁱⁱⁱ in Sint-Jan-in-Ereno. He was born in Sint Laureins on 7 March 1758^iv and died in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo on the 14^th day of Vendemarie in the 12 year of the French Republic^v or 21 September 1803.

Helena died at age 29. By this time she had had 5 children and buried at least 2 of them. (I have been unable to determine the fate of son Judocus.) This was life in the 18^th and 19^th centuries where childhood diseases were prevalent and there were no effective treatments. Two of her children reached adulthood and married. One of them, John Francis (in English) or Jan Francis (in Dutch) or Joannes Franciscus (in Latin) is my great great grandfather.

Judocus Du Four (1758-1803)

Judocus Du Four was born in Sint Laureins, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 7 March 1758ⁱ and baptized the same day. He died in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on the 14^th day of Vendemarie in the 12^th year of the French Republicⁱⁱ which I believe equates to 21 September 1803. Judocus was the son of Petrus Joannes and Isabella (Dimmevet) Du Four. He married Helena Van Schoonacker on 13 Jun 1789ⁱⁱⁱ in Sint-Jan-in-Ereno, She was born in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo on 18 Jul 1768^iv and died in Sint Laureins on 25 Dec 1796^v (or the 24^th of Nivose in the 5^th year of the French Republic).

Researching in Belgium in the period from 1796 to 1810 can be a challenge. FamilySearch.org has filmed church records from about 1600 to 1796 when civil registration begins. The early civil records are difficult to read and are not indexed. Indexing began about 1810 and clerks began to either write the individual’s name in the margin or write the name in a larger darker form within the record so it becomes easier to scan the records looking for your person of interest. Here is where looking at all records for all children paid off for me.

I was looking through death records and came across Maria Jacoba Du Four. Her death record indicated that she was a daughter of Judocus and Helena Du Four. I did not have her on my list of children. She was 36 when she died making her birth date about 1796. This is the transition area for records. I looked through the civil registrations for births in 1796 but could not identify her birth record. I decided to see if she married and I got lucky. Not only did it give her birth date and place but it told me her parents were deceased and where and when they died. With this information, I was able to find Judocus’ death record but not Helena’s.

Maria Teirlinck (1773-1846)

Maria Teirlinck was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 16 February 1773ⁱ and died there on 10 March 1846ⁱⁱ. She was the daughter of Judocus and Judoca (DeKuyper) Teirlinck. She married on 2 May 1792ⁱⁱⁱ Joseph Hecke who was born in Kaprijke on 9 September 1765 and died there on 28 May 1825.

When I looked for Maria’s baptismal date, I could not find any baptisms for a baby named Maria whose parents were Judocus and Judoca DeKuyper in the 1773 time period. Judocus and Judoca did have a daughter baptized in 1773 but her listed name was Joanna Francisca. Maria has never been called anything other than Maria. She married as Maria Teirlinck. When her children were baptized, she was identified as their mother, Maria Teirlinck. In her husband’s death registration, his wife is listed as Maria Francisca Teirlinck. And in her own death registration, she is identified as Maria Teirlinck. Additionally, one of the sponsors at her baptism was Maria Francisca De Gutter. It was common to name a child after her baptismal sponsor in this time period. I also looked through deaths and marriages in the church tables and did not find any Joanna listed consistent with her 1773 birth. I think when the priest entered this information, he recorded an incorrect name for the infant and this is the baptismal record for Maria.

Joseph Hecke (1765-1825)

Joseph Hecke or Eecke was born in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 9 September 1765ⁱ and died there on 28 May 1825ⁱⁱ. He was the son of Petrus and Joanna Agatha (Debouver) Hecke. He married on 2 May 1792 Maria Teirlinckⁱⁱⁱ who was born in Kaprijke on 16 February 1773 and died there on 10 March 1846.

I have been identifying children for each couple using the table of baptisms for the church in each community. Most of these tables, which can be found on FamilySearch.org, list the child’s name, the father’s name and the mother’s maiden name. These tables were constructed by town officials in the 1870’s. Like any finding aid, there are going to be errors. Additionally, these church records start when the local church began keeping records and end when civil birth records were instituted in 1796. So this list of children may not include all of them. For instance, Petrus Joannes Hecke was born in 1801. His baptism is listed in the baptismal table but the actual clerical record was not filmed by FamilySearch and I could not locate a civil registration for him in Kaprijke. However, I did locate a civil death registration for him.

Joris Francis Van De Veire (1764-1839)

Joris Franciscus Van De Veire was born in Oosteeklo, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium about 24 February 1764 (baptismal date)¹ and died in Kaprijke, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium on 7 December 1839². He was the son of Judocus and Livina (Pyckevet) Van De Veire. He married on 12 May 1792 in Lembeke³, Oost Vlaanderen, Belgium Maria Petronella Bultinck born 3 Oct 1768 in Lembeke and died 30 September 1825 in Kaprijke.

Joris, which is Dutch for George, was a weaver, a common occupation in Belgium in the eighteenth century. Production of fine cloth and lace for decorating clothing was a cottage industry that provided cash for things that could not be produced.

Just about everything I know about this man is included in that first paragraph. But those few facts are not easy to come by. The Family History Library has film for church records starting about 1600 and going to 1796 when civil registration became the law. They have had civil records from 1796 to 1870 for several years and have recently added records through 1920. Catholic church records are in Latin and the civil records are in either French (during Napoleon's reign) or Dutch. Then just to make it interesting throw in the changing styles of hand writing during that 300 year span and things can be very frustrating. Fortunately, the church records and the civil records have mostly been indexed. You can usually find a tienjarige tafel (10 year table) somewhere on the film. And for the benefit of the clerks in the town hall, there is usually an index at the end of each year as well. I am very thankful that most of these films have been digitized and are available from the comfort of my home.

Anna Maria Barkley (1808-1865)

Anna Maria Barkley was born in Albany County, New York on 18 December 1808 and died in Oxford County, Ontario on 6 May 1865. She was baptized in St. Paul’s Lutheran Churchⁱ in Berne, Albany, New York on 12 Mar 1809. She is the daughter of Mathias and Margaret (Koch or Kock) Barkley. She married 1) on 16 August 1824 John Winegard born on 10 October 1801 in Albany County, New York and died in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario, Canada on September 3, 1858 and 2) on 4 Jun 1860ⁱⁱ in Mountain William Taylor born about 1808 in Ireland.

The Barkleys are a German Palatine family. Eberhard Buercklin and his family came to North America from Baden-Wuerttemberg to farm on Rensselaer’s estate in Albany County. As the English speaking officials began adding this family to historical records, the name became Barkley, Berkley, Barclay and even Perkly. Perkly is the only one not found in Eberhard’s descendants.

John and Anna Maria lived in New York for about the first 20 years of their marriage. They had 6, possibly 7 children, born in New York. In 1830 they were enumerated in Westerlo, Albany Countyⁱⁱⁱ – 1 male under 5, 1 male 30-39, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-29. The female under 5 was Margaret, the older male and female were Maria and John but the male under 5 has not been identified. There is a 7 year span between Margaret’s birth and the next child, Charity, so it is highly likely they had another child who died young.

The family moved to Mountain sometime after April 1841 when daughter Mary J. was born and before 1845 when son Mathias was born. Anna Maria’s parents and all of her siblings were living there.

They are enumerated in the 1851 census^iv of Upper Canada living in Mountain. The family consisted of John, Mariah, Charity, Abraham, Amy, Polly, Mary J., Matthias and Isaac J. Daughter Margaret had married in 1846. After John’s death in 1858, Anna Maria married and moved with her husband to East Nissouri, Oxford County, Ontario. She is enumerated there in the 1861 census^v.

I have autosomal DNA matches that point to John Winegard and Anna Maria Barkley as the most recent common ancestral couple. Charity Winegard is my great great grandmother. I have Ancestry DNA matches to descendants of four of her siblings - her sister Margaret through her son Adam Barkley, her sister Mary J. through her son James Jackson, her sister Polly through her son Edward Jesse Lennox and her brother Abraham through daughter Gertrude’s son Herbert Wadleigh and through daughter Lillian’s son James Park.

John Winegard (1801-1858)

John Winegard was born in March 1801 in Albany County, New York and died in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario, Canada on September 3, 1858. He was baptized on 10 October 1801ⁱ in the Dutch Reformed Church in Coxsackie, Greene, New York. He is the son of Nicholas and Mary (Fraser) Winegard. He married on 16 August 1824 in New York Anna Maria Barkley who was born in Albany County on 18 December 1808 and died in Oxford County, Ontario on 6 May 1865.

The Winegards were descended from an old Dutch family. Originally the name was spelled Wyngaart or Wyngaard in the early New York records. In the early 1800’s the family began using the Anglicized version of this name and records after 1800 are usually found under Winegard.

John and Anna Maria lived in New York for about the first 20 years of their marriage. John was a carpenter by trade as was his brother Peter and his son Abraham. They had 6, possibly 7 children, born in New York. In 1830 they were enumerated in Westerlo, Albany Countyⁱⁱ – 1 male under 5, 1 male 30-39, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-29. The female under 5 was Margaret, the older male and female were Maria and John but the male under 5 has not been identified. There is a 7 year span between Margaret’s birth and the next child, Charity, so it is highly likely they had another child who died young.

When John’s father died in 1838; his mother had been dead for about 20 years. His brothers were moving away from the Albany County area of New York and his wife’s parents were living in Mountain. So sometime after the birth of daughter Mary J. in 1841, the family moved to Mountain.

They are enumerated in the 1851 censusⁱⁱⁱ of Upper Canada living in Mountain. The family consisted of John, Mariah, Charity, Abraham, Amy, Polly, Mary J., Matthias and Isaac J. Daughter Margaret had married in 1846.

John purchased 6 acres of land^iv from Edmond Doran and his wife Mary, for £25, on 19 October 1855, known as part of the east half of the west half of lot 16 in the 3^rd concession in Mountain. On 15 February 1856 he mortgaged these 6 acres to Henry Merkley^v for £63, 4 shillings, sixpence for 3 years. He died before the term of the mortgage was reached and I have been unsuccessful in determining if the mortgage was satisfied or the land reverted to Henry Merkley. I think it probably reverted to Merkley because I find no more Winegard entries in the Mountain Deed Books.

With the death of John, the family dispersed. His wife remarried and moved to Oxford County, Ontario. His daughters married within a few years of his death and all ended up living in the United States – Margaret went to Kansas, Amy and Mary J. to Iowa, Charity to North Dakota and Polly across the river to Oswegatchie, New York. Abraham followed his sisters to Iowa and moved from there to Nebraska. Matthias moved in the opposite direction to Boston, Massachusetts and died of a fever as a young man. I have been unable to determine what happened to Isaac Jacob.

Catherine Brouse, was born in Matilda, Dundas, Ontario in 1808. She was the youngest child of Peter and Anna Katherina (Carman) Brouse. She died in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario on 8 Oct 1872. She married Elijah Van Camp in Matilda on 18 January 1824. Elijah was born in 1806 in Mountain and died there on 12 October 1870.

Catherine was mentioned in her father’s will dated 27 July 1809ⁱ. She and her three sisters were to share £100. When her father died, Catherine was just 1 year old. Her mother married John Van Camp about 1815. John is her husband Elijah’s father; so, Catherine and Elijah were well acquainted before their marriage.

She was enumerated in the 1851 censusⁱⁱ with her husband and 8 of their 11 children. She can also be found with Elijah in the 1861 censusⁱⁱⁱ. In 1871^iv she is widowed and living with her son Oberlin and granddaughter Phoebe Van Camp.

Catherine was the daughter of a United Empire Loyalist and was entitled to 200 acres of crown land when she reached the age of 21 or married. On 22 January 1828 she filed her petition^v at the same time her husband Elijah did. She stated that she was the daughter of Peter Brouse, a United Empire Loyalist and had never received land from the crown.

On the death of her husband, Catherine received all his personal property and household items^vi. She also received the dwelling house they lived in and the land they were farming for her use and benefit as long as she lived. Then the land was to be given to son Michael with a monetary gift to youngest son, Oberlin.

I have found 3 autosomal DNA matches where Elijah Van Camp and Catherine Brouse have been identified as the most recent common ancestors (MRCA). Two of these were through Ancestry DNA and one through Family Tree DNA. All three matches descend through different children of this couple – daughter Harriet and sons John and Oberlin. I also have several matches where the MRCA is Elijah’s parents or grandparents. It is always nice to have confirmation that you actually do descend from this family.
