Anna Katharina Carman (1771 – 1843)

Anna Katharina Carman was born 14 November 1771[i] in Johnstown, Fulton, New York and died in Matilda, Dundas, Ontario, Canada on 15 June 1843[ii]. Anna Katharina preferred to be called Katharine or Caty. She is the daughter of Michael and Maria Margaretha (Alterin) Carman. She married (1) in 1788 in Matilda, Peter Brouse, born 1 January 1764 in Johnstown and died in 1809 in Matilda and (2) about 1815, John Van Camp born 16 July 1766 in Newtown, Albany, New York and died 5 May 1851 in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario.

            As the daughter of a United Empire Loyalist, Katherine was entitled to a grant of 200 acres of land from the crown. She first applied in 1793[iii] and this first petition was approved but she never received an order for land. So, she reapplied in 1800[iv]. This second petition was also approved and resulted in an order for 200 acres.

            I have several DNA matches on Ancestry.com where the most recent common ancestral couple (MRCA) is Peter and Anna Katharina (Carman) Brouse. Of course, there is always a possibility that we have other ancestors in common but, so far, I have not identified any.

Peter Brouse (1764 - 1809)

Peter Brouse was born 1 January 1764 in Johnstown, Fulton, New York and died in Matilda, Dundas, Ontario, Canada between 27 July 1809 and 6 February 1810. He is the son of George and Elizabeth (Hamilton) Brouse. He married Anna Katharina Carman in 1788 in Matilda. Anna Katharine, who went by Katherine, was born on 14 November 1771 in Johnstown and died 15 June 1843 in Matilda.

Peter Brouse was a Loyalist like his father and his brothers George and Joseph. He enlisted in the King’s Royal Ranges of New York along with his brothers and after the peace of 1783, all three settled in Matilda. Peter is listed in the muster roll taken 13 October 1784[i] with 1 woman, probably his mother and 3 boys over 10. These 3 are probably his brothers George, William and Joseph. His father had died in New York early in the War and the entire family moved to Canada in 1783. By 1784 his three sisters were already married. He is also listed on the muster roll for 1785[ii] and the provision list for 1786[iii].

Peter settled on lot 22 in the first concession in Matilda. This is where he made his home but like most of his contemporaries, he regularly purchased and sold other lots in Matilda and Mountain. Each lot consisted of about 200 acres. On 22 March 1804, he sold 300 acres to Thomas Fraser of Edwardsburg consisting of half of lot 30 in the 5^th concession of Matilda and all of lot one of the 8^th concession of Matilda[iv].

Peter wrote his will on 27 July 1809[v] and probably died shortly thereafter. At his death he owned the following property: in Matilda, lot 22 in the first concession, lot 9 in the 7^th concession, east half of lot 30 in the 3^rd concession, east quarter of lot 30 in the 5^th concession and in Mountain, lot 12 in the first concession. In Canada at this time, if a man died owning only real estate located in only one county, then probate was not necessary. His heirs would take a copy of his will to the clerk’s office to be entered into the land records for the county.  Peter’s will was submitted on 6 February 1810 and entered as memorial 47.

The terms of his will are as follows: His real estate and personal property are to be divided equally among his wife and children. His four daughters, Mary, Rachel, Betsey and Caty are to divide £100. His real estate is to be appraised and divided equally among his 6 sons, George, Peter, Michael, John, William and Frederick.  His wife, Caty, is to have the east half of lot 22 in the Front Concession of Matilda with all buildings, a farm, farm equipment, 2/3 of the cows and all money left at my death for the purpose of raising the children. George is to have the west half of lot 22 and Frederick the east half of lot 22. All the rest of the real estate is to be divided equally between Peter, Michael, John and William. The will is witnessed by Paul Glasford and Elizabeth and Daniel Puckett.

Mary Frees (1771 - 1814)

Mary Frees was born 6 March 1771 in Stone Arabia, Montgomery, New York and baptized there in Trinity Lutheran Church in March 1771[i] . She died in Matilda, Dundas, Ontario, Canada about 1814. She is the daughter of John and Catherine (Coons) Frees. She married John Van Camp about 1786 in Matilda. John was born in Newtown, Rensselaer, New York on 16 July 1766[ii] and died in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario on 5 May 1851[iii].

I am not sure of the nationality of John Frees. His last name is spelled Fries, Fris or Frees. He could be from Friesland, an island in the North Sea. “Fries” is a very common name in the Netherlands. He could have moved to Amsterdam and then decided to move to the American colonies to make his fortune.

There is another family named Frees living in New York at this time and there is some confusion between John Frees of Palatine, New York and John Frees of Athens, New York. Robert Scott Shaw[iv] reviewed the evidence available and makes a compelling argument that these are two separate men based on tax lists and residency. Our John Frees was a Loyalist and moved to Canada in 1783 while the other John Frees settled in western Massachusetts.

Mary was the daughter of a United Empire Loyalist and was entitled to a grant from the crown for 200 acres of land. She filed a petition on 8 July 1808[v] stating that she was the daughter of John Frees, late of Matilda Township, deceased, an UE Loyalist, is married to John Van Camp and has never received an order for land from the crown. These petitions are accompanied by a sworn statement that the she is who she says she is and usually another individual attests to her statement. She received her order for 200 acres of land.

ii.          Mary Van Camp, b. 1792. She married John Saver on 11 Nov 1814.

iii.        John Van Camp, b. 23 May 1794 and d. 22 Mar 1878. He married about 1815 Abigail Coons, b. 23 Aug 1800 in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario, Canada and died after 1871.

iv.        Sarah Van Camp, b. 1796, d. 1874. She married before 1818 Siras or Cyrus Teal.

v.          Peter Van Camp, b. 1798 and d. before 1880 in either Ohio or Michigan. He married Maria Converse before 1825 in New York. Maria was born in 1806 in Vermont and died in 1880.

vi.        Elijah Van Camp, b. 1806, d. 12 October 1870 in Mountain. He married on 18 Jan 1824 Catherine Brouse, b. 1808 in Matilda and d. 8 October 1872 in Mountain.

vii.       Rachel Van Camp, b. 27 October 1809 and d. 27 October 1874. She married William Hesson on 19 March 1834 in Osnabruck, Stormont, Ontario. William was born in Ireland about 1801.

John Van Camp (1766 - 1851)

John Van Camp was born 16 July 1766 in Newtown, Albany, New York and baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church in Schaughticoke, Rensselaer, New York on 19 July 1766[i]. He died in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario, Canada on 5 May 1851[ii]. He is the son of Peter and Femmetje or Phoebe (Bergen) Van Camp. He married first about 1786 Mary Frees in Matilda and second Anna Katherina (Carmen) Brouse, the widow of Peter Brouse about 1815 in Matilda. Mary Frees was born in Stone Arabia, Montgomery, New York on 6 March 1771[iii] and died in Matilda about 1814. Anna Katherine Carmen was born on 19 November 1771[iv] in Johnstown, Fulton, New York and died in Matilda on 15 June 1843.

John Van Camp was a Loyalist like his father, his brothers and his brother-in-law. All these men enlisted in the New York Loyal Rangers (Jessup’s Corps) and fought for his majesty, King George III. When the Americans with the help of the French defeated the British at Yorktown, all British Loyalist troops mustered in Quebec or Niagara while the British Government decided what to do with them. Meanwhile, most civilians who supported the King also left the American Colonies and headed for either Canada or England.

The British decided to open the western territories in Canada for settlement. A series of counties and towns were established along the St. Lawrence River and along the shore of Lake Ontario. Loyalist troops were assigned to specific towns, John Van Camp, his brother Jacob, father Peter and brother-in-law John Boyce (Buis) were settled in Matilda.

When a muster was taken on 13 October 1784,[v] John was noted as living in Matilda but currently absent because he had gone to Canada (Montreal) for Cattle. He is also listed in August 1786[vi] on the muster roll in Matilda without any dependents. Shortly after this muster, he probably married Mary Frees since their daughter Catherine was born in 1787.

In 1791 John was granted a certificate entitling him to 200 acres of land; he sold this certificate to Jesse Losee[vii] in 1796. He obtained title to 100 acres consisting of the East half of lot 25 in the 2nd Concession in Matilda from his brother Jacob which he sold to John Taylor[viii] on 27 February 1805. He then bought from his brother-in-law, John Boyce,[ix] 109 acres of land known as the West half of lot 29 in the front concession along the St. Lawrence River. He sold this property to Jacob Brouse on 7 November 1836[x]. John would have been 70 years old at this time and was probably eager to retire. Sometime after the death of his wife, Anna Katherine, he moved to Mountain and lived with his son Elijah until his death in 1851 at age 84.

I have 4 DNA matches on Ancestry and 1 on My Heritage where the most recent common ancestral couple are John and Mary (Frees) Van Camp. Two of these matches are through John and Mary’s son John who married Abigail Coons. I am also related to Abigail Coons through Mary Frees’ mother Catherine Coons. Abigail descends from Catherine’s brother Jacob Coons who married Magdalena Carmen another relative. This is not at all unusual for this period in Ontario. Before the Loyalists settled here, this was wilderness. There were not many marriage partners to choose from. John and Abigail’s son, Reuben Van Camp, married Mary Orilla Brown, granddaughter of my third great grandparents, John and Asenath (Buck) Baldwin. So, on this line I am related to the Coons, the Bucks, the Baldwins, the Carmens and the Van Camps.

The other two Ancestry matches are through John and Mary’s daughter, Sarah Van Camp who married Cyrus Teal. One match is through daughter Mary Ann and the other is through daughter Evaline who married George Kentner whose mother was Elizabeth Coons.

The My Heritage match is through son Peter Van Camp who moved to New York and married there. I decided a table might be easier to show this information.
